IASTM Technique
What is IASTM?
IASTM (Instrument-Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization) is a specialized manual therapy technique that uses specially designed instruments to treat soft tissue dysfunctions. At Dr. Monica’s Physiotherapy, Spine & Wellness Solutions, we use IASTM to break down scar tissue, adhesions, and improve mobility. The technique involves applying controlled pressure with tools to specific areas of the body, helping promote healing and tissue regeneration.
Purpose of IASTM
The primary purpose of IASTM is to address soft tissue restrictions, reduce pain, and restore mobility. It is particularly effective for treating chronic conditions such as tendinitis, muscle strains, and post-surgical scar tissue. The technique stimulates the body’s inflammatory response, which jumpstarts the healing process and helps reduce long-term pain and dysfunction.
Benefits of IASTM
- Scar Tissue Breakdown: Helps to break down adhesions and scar tissue that restrict movement and cause pain.
- Improved Mobility: Enhances joint and muscle flexibility by addressing tissue restrictions.
- Pain Relief: Reduces pain in affected areas by stimulating tissue healing and reducing inflammation.
- Faster Recovery: Accelerates the recovery process for both acute and chronic soft tissue injuries.
- Enhanced Blood Flow: Improves circulation to the treated areas, promoting healing and reducing swelling.
What to Expect
During an IASTM session, a trained therapist will use hand-held instruments to apply pressure to the affected areas, which may feel slightly uncomfortable but is not typically painful. The pressure helps release soft tissue restrictions, and patients may experience mild redness or bruising after the treatment, which is a normal part of the healing process. Sessions typically last 20 to 30 minutes, depending on the condition being treated.
At Dr. Monica’s Physiotherapy, Spine & Wellness Solutions, IASTM is often integrated with other therapies such as Cupping Therapy, Exercise Therapy, or Strengthening & Conditioning to provide a comprehensive approach to soft tissue healing and rehabilitation.
